Bombay Bowl Showdown

 bombay-bowl1

Every year on the Sunday following the Calcutta Cup (England vs. Scotland) the Dodderers have their very own version created by our President Foz….

 …The Bombay Bowl

It was a lovely Spring morning, warm, sunny with almost no wind. Actually there was too much Sun (depending which way your team was playing) and plenty of Ozone Harming wind generated by fellow Dodderers. Perhaps we should calculate our Carbon Footprint?

We settled down to a big game of England vs. Scotland (the rematch) following |Englands’ trouncing of the poor old Scots in the Calcutta Cup. Eventually as the ever-so-late Dodderers arrived we split up into four teams as some Dodderers felt they were not seeing enough ball to justify their attendance. All your Captain can say is “Team Game”

Do you know that Sun brings out the most lip in some Dodderers? Your Captain thinks that it may be a form of heat exhaustion caused by sun and exercise that inhibits the executive function of the pre-frontal cortex. Result…more lip…

Back to the Bombay Bowl …

General fitness has been impacted in the last few months….many fellow Dodderers (including your Captain) were puffing like Steam Trains and suffering long lapses of attention and general lack of dynamism. Chris has a theory…He’s never been able to separate thought from action…something your Captain managed long ago…so your Captains’ thinking about running , not actually doing it…

One team stood out (Tom, Tim, Timmy, and George) for their seemingly boundless energy and general athleticism, great play, and general all round effort….

The winners of the Bombay Bowl were indeed Tom, Tim, Timmy, and George who were very deserved of the accolade as presented by Our President Foz. Timmy must have thought it was Formula One as he sprayed the champers around….

Due to general fitness concerns from the Club Doctor…the usual suspention of mid-week training is lifted.

See you all next week!

Spicy play for post Valentine’s match

February 16, 2009 4 comments

As our President Foz put it – “It’s a bit Spicy today….I like it”
Your Captain doesn’t know if it was post Valentines frustrations or poor England performance vs. Wales; but today’s play was definitely more Spicy, Vociferous, and Argumentative than over the last few weeks. It all started with a short Big Game, but as the late-commers drifted in we quickly decided to make it a four team league….

Foz as ever was keen to make sure the sides were as balanced as possible…and after the usual negotiation (you’ve got all the fast ones…. and we want Tom or Dick) the teams were laid to rest, and we went our ways in our league.

Off to a fast Start…. the league games were fast paced and not without the Hard Touches we have come to expect. early on your Captain managed to dummy Tom which resulted in smiles all round – except Tom who protested he’d had plenty to drink at the Valentines ball the night before…

Kiwi was the star turn of the day – scoring ten tries or so…which is something we have come to expect so twenty would be required for a Hall-of-Flame mention. On a number of occasions Kiwi vented his frustration with the quality of passing or the speed of passing the ~@~& ball out to him.

Postman Pat was on good vocal form – often sparring with George who both seem to spend plenty of time discussing the virtues of the “Referees’ Decision”. At one point Nick managed a minor injury by falling and hitting Pats’ arse….probably enough said about that.

Jordan was making a good impression and managed to wrong foot his Dad (Chris) on a number of occasions. Foz, Dick and Rich were all in characteristically good form. Your Captain even managed a couple of switches with Dick!

After the League which was won by Foz’s team (See Fridges comment below)  Tom, Rod, Kiwi and Fridge….we settled down to a big game, which carried on for some time, and was particularly energetic given the previous hours exertions.
We must have needed it…and with fustrations vented we left at nearly 10am – which could almost be a record for duration on a Sunday morning….

….Once again already looking forward to next week…don’t forget to bring the attitude!

Patchy Play Today

Today’s Doddering was plainly not up to scratch. There were moments of greatness but plenty of  lapses in concentration and lack of energy all round.

The Big Game (we did not have the attendance for a league) got off to a very fast start. Early on Jenks made the best looking, two handed – arms stretched interception that was  a real promise for the rest of the match but unfortunately after the first fifteen or so minutes we were  mostly looking pretty poor and apathetic.

The Ferret is showing some real determination to catch those long passes and was showing excellent promise that could preclude entry into the Anchor Butter Handling short list. Keep it up Dan!

Robin made some nice tries today as did Chris and Kiwi. Even your Captain managed to sneak one in although The Ferret was intent on making your Captain work for his try by chasing most of the pitch.

Those of your that observe the 9.14am deadline missed something special today. As we were all suffering from severe lack of energy, concentration, and ball handling skills we had a ‘walking’ match on half pitch. Nobody was allowed to run so position, passing, and marking were particularly important to make space. Actually its much harder than it sounds.

Next week: More focus, Energy, Less Beer (maybe)
