Dodderers go dragon boat racing

Sunday was not the best weather ever, those of you that managed the usual Sunday morning session were greeted with cold weather and plenty of rain. At some points the rain was falling so hard and fast that your Captain couldn’t see anything and was unable to catch any passes. So no change there then!

There were some glimmers in-between the rain drops and spirited performances from many Dodderers… Try of the Day goes to the President – Captain combination for an excellent fast pass from the Captain to the Foz who was able to beat the opposition on the outside!

On to the Dragon Boat racing…this was our very first attempt at entering a crew for the Gloucester Dragon Boat Regatta.
Immediately following arrival we assembled (with our bandannas) for a team photo under the Dodderers flag. This would be the very last time we would look dry…

But wait … we’re missing some of the team…Oh  No! … Barney and his first mate have bailed out…
….mmm perhaps a rename to Blarney… was it too cold?
Luckily Foz collared Andy who had come to watch, and a passer by (Jen)  for the first race….

Felix also came to the rescue dropping everything to be with us for the remainder of the races….

After we won all of our heats we were into one of the semi-finals..

…we showed our approval with a Mexican wave!

Into the semis your Captain shows Foz he has a curved one…
…and in case he forgets, Andy has prepared his order for Peking Duck by painting it on his paddle!

In the end it was close…the final went right to the line…we were beaten by a mere 0.3 seconds by a more experienced  team, but we certainly had the upper hand when it came to team spirit and supporters!

We did win the best dressed team…winning a trophy…but unfortunately your Captain was not up to scratch when it came to receiving the prize…

Happy Easter

Last weeks Doddering saw the return of skill. The most amazing try your Captain saw was by Dick who is obviously in top form. Dick was extra slippery and difficult to catch – but what was excellent was the way he would receive a pass at arms length in one hand whilst making a complete change in direction.
At times it was like Bonfire Night – wonderful to watch and drawing gasps of ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’ from onlooking Dodderers.

Nice to see The Ferret again – skills were not particularly in evidence and once again he thrusts himself into the mix as a contender for The Anchor Butter Award.
Simon also made a welcome appearance and led our team by scoring most of the tries.Tim was also in great form and made some impressive passes under pressure.
Chris; not happy with his own performance on the pitch, at times resorted to a little football at his own frustration. Possibly another Anchor Butter nomination…

Your Captain is still not in great form and puffed his way around the pitch drawing some concern from our Treasurer – who must have been worried that he might not get the subs which luckily your Captain had paid on-line that morning.
Reminder to all that have not paid. We need the subs otherwise the Council might come and take our pitch away!

Actually while we are on the subject of the Treasurer – it was drawn to your captains attention that Nigel doesn’t have a nickname. We obviously need to fix this immediately so comments with appropriate names appreciated.

Where was Simo? – Simo admitted yesterday that he’d woken by the alarm clock and then went back to sleep and awoke again at 8.20 – too late for any Doddering. Your Captain’s thinking about a new timeliness award especially ofter the debacle the week before when the clocks went forward.

Don’t forget Doddering on Easter Sunday – same time. This week you’re in for a treat, Kiwi will be the Blogmeister as your Captain will be away.

The First Spring Match of the Year

spring91

Floodlit by the morning sun and encouraged by the balmy +10 degrees this weeks Doddering turned out to be a relatively disappointing affair. As if we had all emerged from a winters hibernation and had stopped to admire the flowers, most of us appeared half asleep – not the hardened Dodderers that we want to be. Gone was the bite and ambition from last week,  sadly to be replaced with yawns, half closed eyes, poor ball handling, and generally low effort.

Having said that there were some flashes of inspiration. Jordans’ dummy on Simo immediately followed by a dummy on newbie (Toby) to score was a sheer pleasure to watch. Likewise George managed a positively balletic pirouette dummy past Foz  to  score…Pat once again managed a long one handed pass to Toby also to score – so that’s two out of twenty that have made it lately….
A Special welcome to our latest Dodderer, Dave H (aka Toby) who played his first match with us this week.

So for next week your Captain encourages you to stop looking at the flowers*….and Think Rugby!

* no flowers were harmed in the making of this Blog….

Arctic Freezer Trophy

Upon arrival this morning it was immediately apparent that Postman Pat had not marked out the pitch. In fact he’d failed to clear away the snow so the pitch was nowhere to be seen….

As only ten Dodderers had turned up we settled down to a game of five-a-side. Andy made a welcome return and spent much of the time commenting that he was unfit although he was still able to outclass us all.

Yet again The Ferret showed us that he’s capable of catching those long passes…and that he doesn’t deserve to be in the running for the Anchor Butter Award

Sharky has been playing well lately and this time was no exception – he was able to score a well deserved hatric; including a great side-step on Andy for a try.
Luckily Simo brought his camera along and recorded  some play for the blog as well as take some stills.  After much crunching through the snow … George lifted the Ice Sculpture as the captain of the winning side.

After the 9.14 exodus the remaining six of us played skins vs. shirts with  Simo, Foz and Tim up for the skins. The non skin side tried to take the advantage by holding snow for a ‘cold touch’ on the skins but to no avail as the skins made the winning try.

In the video kindly compiled by Simo, you will see some exceptional Doddering – especially the part where your captain ends up falling over in the snow whilst trying to move backwards for position.

Roll on next week – more attendance required too – you know who you are!

Sundays ‘Big game’

This sunday it was fairly cold and the turnout was too low for the normal four team event, so we celebrated with a ‘Big Game’….
The game was fast paced with heavier than usual tackling; and Si was the first to be on the receiving end of a difficult tackle….athough recovered after a few seconds rolling around…

…actually any more seconds and I think he could have applied for the Hairdryer award I’m thinking of creating following the funny advert from Pat and Simo…

Dan “The Ferret” seems to be back to his old ways and is tipped to appear in the nominations for the “Anchor Butter Award”…. Still he has almost a whole year to get back to last summers highs.
Tim needs a special mention for his fantastic try, as does Jordan for his numerous ones.

Lastly, your Captain has to report that he was not feeling too good on the pitch and suspects that the excesses shown by the bathroom scales have taken a toll on performance….

Happy New Year!
