Sundays Doddering

Sunday was a great day for Doddering….
The weather was great…we had a new junior member…and the Rick Flick is gaining in popularity…

Your Captain was up and ready by six o’clock – mostly because he couldn’t sleep but also in anticipation of a mornings Dodderery. Normally he would have had ‘more than a few’ the night before which helps with the usual lie-in until seven, but with an hour or so to burn and having serviced the wife with a cup of tea, still managed to be around 5 minutes late for kickoff…

Upon arrival – a new junior member – Dan – ‘Son of Simon’ was present and ready to go!
But wait a fully ready to go new member – with speed, agility and his fathers ability to jump into a high pass!  At one point he out ran Dan – ‘The Ferret’  to score a try – excellent – more please!

In last weeks’ blog we mentioned the ‘Rick Flick’ as demonstrated by Rich (who this week was the spy in the camp for forthcoming Dodderers vs. Old ruckers match). The Rick Flick seems to be catching on with a number of successful attempts to launch a ball in the wrong direction. This is truly in the spirit of Dodderering … Well done Rich!

Kiwi was just not in best form this week…he did manage to demonstrate the turn of speed we all expect from him, but unfortunatley most of the time he was rooted to the spot. Normally we see this behaviour from fellow Dodderers in the first few weeks’ of morning sun where everyone seems to be in slow motion (including your Captain) but by now this should have passed. In true Doddering fashon this is entirely acceptable if as we suspect, Kiwi was putting a few away the night before!

Following the usual four team Tournament we had a Big game with eight a side so plenty of people were staying on. Following the big game we had Dodderers extra with four a side where we played best of 5 as by then we were definately low on energy.

Your Captain is unfortunately unable to attend next Sundays’ match as a couple of tickets to the British Grand Prix fell into his lap yesterday…and as this is probably going be the last at Silverstone and having not been before your Captain has relunctantly decided to pass on Doddering this Sunday. Open invitation for a new Blogger….

Roll on Thursday when we beat the Old Ruckers on their home turf and begin to reclaim the ‘Bit of Stick’ !

Happy Easter

Last weeks Doddering saw the return of skill. The most amazing try your Captain saw was by Dick who is obviously in top form. Dick was extra slippery and difficult to catch – but what was excellent was the way he would receive a pass at arms length in one hand whilst making a complete change in direction.
At times it was like Bonfire Night – wonderful to watch and drawing gasps of ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’ from onlooking Dodderers.

Nice to see The Ferret again – skills were not particularly in evidence and once again he thrusts himself into the mix as a contender for The Anchor Butter Award.
Simon also made a welcome appearance and led our team by scoring most of the tries.Tim was also in great form and made some impressive passes under pressure.
Chris; not happy with his own performance on the pitch, at times resorted to a little football at his own frustration. Possibly another Anchor Butter nomination…

Your Captain is still not in great form and puffed his way around the pitch drawing some concern from our Treasurer – who must have been worried that he might not get the subs which luckily your Captain had paid on-line that morning.
Reminder to all that have not paid. We need the subs otherwise the Council might come and take our pitch away!

Actually while we are on the subject of the Treasurer – it was drawn to your captains attention that Nigel doesn’t have a nickname. We obviously need to fix this immediately so comments with appropriate names appreciated.

Where was Simo? – Simo admitted yesterday that he’d woken by the alarm clock and then went back to sleep and awoke again at 8.20 – too late for any Doddering. Your Captain’s thinking about a new timeliness award especially ofter the debacle the week before when the clocks went forward.

Don’t forget Doddering on Easter Sunday – same time. This week you’re in for a treat, Kiwi will be the Blogmeister as your Captain will be away.

Patchy Play Today

Today’s Doddering was plainly not up to scratch. There were moments of greatness but plenty of  lapses in concentration and lack of energy all round.

The Big Game (we did not have the attendance for a league) got off to a very fast start. Early on Jenks made the best looking, two handed – arms stretched interception that was  a real promise for the rest of the match but unfortunately after the first fifteen or so minutes we were  mostly looking pretty poor and apathetic.

The Ferret is showing some real determination to catch those long passes and was showing excellent promise that could preclude entry into the Anchor Butter Handling short list. Keep it up Dan!

Robin made some nice tries today as did Chris and Kiwi. Even your Captain managed to sneak one in although The Ferret was intent on making your Captain work for his try by chasing most of the pitch.

Those of your that observe the 9.14am deadline missed something special today. As we were all suffering from severe lack of energy, concentration, and ball handling skills we had a ‘walking’ match on half pitch. Nobody was allowed to run so position, passing, and marking were particularly important to make space. Actually its much harder than it sounds.

Next week: More focus, Energy, Less Beer (maybe)

Great play today in difficult conditions

January 18, 2009 3 comments

After consulting with the Met Office yesterday to check on the prevailing weather conditions your Captain was heartened by the “Good Weather Window” we were forecast.
On arrival this morning the pitch was definitely wet and fairly muddy, and indeed we had the good weather that was forecast altough when we left the Magpies the pitch was definitely much muddier…

As we trudged through the mud ready to coax our bodies into life – our  team iinstinctively selected the highest and driest ground for our kick-off in this weeks four team league.

Fridge Door Left Open
Following the kickoff your Captain was immediately blessed with the best ‘dummy’ on Fridge resulting in a try. Seconds later another chance to dodge the open-doored Fridge to score another try. Sadly it was mostly downhill after that as fitness could not keep up…

Great to see Jenks again…but somebody should have stopped him playing alongside Tom, or Tom should have offered him even more drink last night!

Anchor Butter Award
Dan – The Ferret; is still looking a strong contender for the award – and there is a good chance he could wrestle the title from Kiwi (who probably didn’t deserve it last year, but didn’t perform on the night). Towards the end of the game the ball started to resemble a really gritty soap bar and was therefore really tough to catch so allowances will be made.

Once again Tim who in his return to blistering form managed to scythe through the lines and score a great one man try. Tim is really showing us all what we could be capable of in another ten or twenty  years. I hope we can all live up to it. Keep it up Tim!

Has anyone noticed that Nigels form has increased significantly later? – not only is he leaner , fitter and faster but his increased performance has resulted in less lip too. Nice One Nigel!
Sadly though word has trickled through that there may be one or two ‘illegal’ off pitch training sessions at the local gym so once again we may have to consider the handicapping scheme we have talked about before.

Postman Pat made a perfect long pass today through The Ferrets upturned arms (resembling a goal post), also perfectly received by Foz who was waiting to score a try on the wing. Given that the ball was a bar of soap and the distance was long this probably deserves an award of its own. Shame the camera wasn’t there.

Looking forward to next week already!

Sundays ‘Big game’

This sunday it was fairly cold and the turnout was too low for the normal four team event, so we celebrated with a ‘Big Game’….
The game was fast paced with heavier than usual tackling; and Si was the first to be on the receiving end of a difficult tackle….athough recovered after a few seconds rolling around…

…actually any more seconds and I think he could have applied for the Hairdryer award I’m thinking of creating following the funny advert from Pat and Simo…

Dan “The Ferret” seems to be back to his old ways and is tipped to appear in the nominations for the “Anchor Butter Award”…. Still he has almost a whole year to get back to last summers highs.
Tim needs a special mention for his fantastic try, as does Jordan for his numerous ones.

Lastly, your Captain has to report that he was not feeling too good on the pitch and suspects that the excesses shown by the bathroom scales have taken a toll on performance….

Happy New Year!
